Overview
The IC11 Bin inspection project was a critical internal assessment by Fremantle Port Authority at their Kwinana facility. The aim was to determine the structural integrity and weld condition of the IC11 bins through detailed internal analysis. The confined nature of the work area required a combination of rope access, confined space management, and advanced testing techniques to ensure a safe and accurate outcome.
Scope of Work
- Installation of rope access anchor points and static lines to enable controlled entry into the IC11 bins
- Deployment of rope access technicians to descend internally and carry out weld brushing and surface preparation
- Coordination of a qualified NDT technician to perform Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT) on internal welds
- Completion of internal thickness testing and detailed condition reporting for FPA asset management
- Daily safety briefings, breathalyser checks, and on-site safety training focused on hot works and dropped object prevention
Outcome
The inspection was completed safely and without incident. All structural and weld assessments were finalised within the required timeframe, with detailed reporting provided to Fremantle Port Authority for ongoing asset planning. SMS Group Services demonstrated strong capabilities in executing high-risk, confined space NDT inspections, backed by disciplined planning and robust safety controls.
